Every time I go to Naples, I am so struck by the energy. Part of me thinks it’s from living near an active Volcano, Mount Vesuvio.
Part of what scared me about Italians when I lived in America was that it always sounded like they were fighting. Now I see it’s that they are so passionate about everything. Naples is noisy! People yelling, car horns, motorbikes zipping by.. it can be exhausting in many ways, but totally worth the trip.
Naples gets a bad rap. Yes, it’s messy. Yes, it can be really “gritty”. But it was a noble kingdom and filled with an incredible wealth of beauty and art. The palazzi, churches and museums. It’s not really a day trip sort of place, you need more time to go deeper.
This month’s market guide we visted Naples, called Napoli in Italian.
As a base for travel, you can also go to the ruins of Pompei and Herculaneum. Take a ferry boat to the islands, Capri or Ischia with it’s thermal spas.
The app guide which is for the paid subscribers is rather large as Naples is really a mecca for good food and wine. I can only lightly even touch on what there is to see and do.
The city is divided up into riones, neighborhoods. You should really concentrate on one or two a day. I adore walking around town, but to reach the various rione, you can also easily take the metro line. Line 1 is also an “art line” each station decorated by different artists. Don’t miss taking the escalotor down to my favorite, Toledo, even if you aren’t taking a metro ride anywhere.
After the paywall, I have included some travel tips and recipes. If you love Naples, sign up for the month and download the app and get access to this newsletter as well.
Mille Grazie for all the support. Next month we travel to Torino.
