Celebrate:Quaresimale- Tuscany's sweets for Lent
Most people give up sweets for Quaresima,(Lent). The Tuscans have a cookie for that! This week's two recipes, Quaresimale cookies and Baccala alla Livornese.
I attended Catholic schools for 12 years, so am familiar with all the holidays. I no longer practice, but am fascinated by the recipes associated with the holidays.
My newsletters for the paid subscribers will share the recipes Italians celebrate the holidays with throughout the year. So many recipes are only made on special holidays or are seasonal. I was a pastry chef in America and desserts are my passion. I have been collecting recipes since I moved here in 1984.
The paid subscription also includes my ebook, Secrets From My Tuscan Kitchen and accesso the the archives and the Markets of Italy app/guides.
Ash Wednesday, Mercoledi delle Cenere, was the end of Carnival- Carnevale and the beginning of Lent- Quaresima, the 40 days preceding Easter- Pasqua for purifying and repenting in life and at the table.
Most Catholics give up eating meat and sweets. I was surprised to find this chocolate cookie for sale everywhere in Florence during Lent. They are so fun to also make.
This week’s recipe is in my newsletter for paid subscribers—these “alphabet cookies” and a favorite, Baccala alla Livornese, video lesson.
