I was sort of shocked the first time I arrived in Palermo. There was the flashy high end shopping part of the city with newer buildings arriving from the airport in a cab. Then Bam,old downtown Palermo which had been bombed during World War 2.
Insane contrasts.
Beautiful churches
and just nearby, buildings never repaired after the bombings.
I took my first trip in 2005, and since it has been getting better and better. People are investing in the old buildings and restoring downtown.
The Capo market is not too large and on the main street all food.
There is also the Ballero’ market which is really large and the Vuccuria which now is almost nothing, but hosts street food in the evenings!
They love to grill!
This is the mystery basket outside of the Capo market. No one tells you what it is. But I have had it several times, seems to be the left-over tendons and beefy bits. Not for everyone. They serve it with salt, it’s called Frittole. The boiled beef bits are then slow cooked in fat. I prefer it to the Panini with the beef spleen, which you will find more frequently.
It’s all part of the nose-to-tail concept. No Waste.
