Welcome to my new series for paid subscribers.

To me, the markets are the heart and pulse of a city. A visit to the market and you see what the locals eat, regional specialities, and what is in season.

There are often small places to eat inside the markets or in the vicinity, as well as small wine bars and coffee shops frequented by locals.

I am creating mini-guides to some of my favorite cities in Italy and what I would see and do on a short trip.

Most people do two or three days in town and then head out and explore other towns.

I am starting with Bologna, the largest city in Emilia Romagna. It’s also an easy day trip ( or an overnighter) from Florence.

What’s going to be included in the new series?

For each town we will have several monthly posts.

  • A Google Map guide for each town includes places to eat, drink, shop, and stay.

  • A typical regional recipe

If you want to join me on this virtual trip, you can upgrade to the paid version to receive my monthly guides.

  • Bologna

  • Florence

  • Rome

  • Venice

  • Torino

  • Livorno

The first 6 cities I will feature.

This is one of my new projects.

Have you set new goals or dreams for 2023?

I have.

After Covid, I have taken a deeper look into how I want to travel. Slower and delve deeper. Move around less and experience more. I now tend to get overloaded by trying to do too much too quickly. If you are traveling a long way, you want to see as much as possible, but if you can’t remember where you’ve been or what you saw? It reminds me of the old movie “If it’s Tuesday, it must be Belgium”.

I was inspired to revisit many places I have taken clients on tour. Things have changed in the 38 years I have been living here. Italy has changed so much with international foods as well. I usually won’t suggest eating Chinese or Japanese foods in my writing, but I do know that sometimes you need a break from Italian food. I have been known to eat a kebab now and then! Mostly I make my international dishes as I crave them as well.

But in Italy, the quality of the food and the reasonable prices for meals with wine always astonish everyone.

Take time to sit in a piazza and people watch. Live a little of the Dolce Vita, the Dolce Fa Niente.

How many of us can sit and relax?

I want more of that!!!

Bologna is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.

Bologna is a great base for other day trips in what is known as the “Food Valley”, slow food and fast cars.

Some of the most famous food products are produced nearby. Prosciutto, Parmigiano and Aceto Balsamico.

Do plan on day tripping to see where these are made, but if not,you can eat well almost anywhere here.
