Cose Dolce- Sweet Things
A little something sweet at the end of a meal is always the right choice.
I am feeling lost with the news of the damages done by the fire in Los Angeles. Several of my friends have lost their homes and lucky a couple of friends did not lose their homes.
I was horrified to hear of people finding people setting fires.. possibly to make people flee their homes and allow the looters coming in.
I have chosen to donate to Jose Andres’ World Kitchen. They are always on-site when disaster hits, feeding people.
Food is comfort. It is love.
Sweets are a little something extra in Italy. Not present at every meal. At my mother-in-law’s house, she always put a bowl of fruit and some cheese at the end of the meal. A perfect pairing in Tuscany is a pear and pecorino cheese, Tuscan pecorino, which is much less salty than Pecorino Romano.
For Sunday lunch, someone would walk down to the local pastry shop and bring a tray or small pastries.
This week I am sharing a recipe that I made which combines two of my favorite simple recipes, like and Italian shortbread. Many of the desserts in Italy are simple, rustic “dry” cookies to have at the end of a meal with a sweet dessert wine.
In Tuscany, you find Biscotti di Prato, also called Cantucci, served with a Vin Santo.
I enjoy collecting recipes and surprising my friends. Today,I was going to make a cornmeal-based recipe, but I had no cornmeal; then, I remembered I also had another recipe that used white flour. I created a blend, as I wanted the crispy almonds baked in.
