This weekend they have told us to expect “Hannibale”, a super hot heat wave coming from Africa. Record breaking heat for the end of May and still a month from the beginning of summer.
If you have ever been to Italy, it’s pretty famous for the lack of ice served in drinks here. Even my Florentine husband, Andrea, is starting to make ice!
Posso avere un po di ghiacco per favore?
This may come in handy, May I have some ice please?
I drink a lot of water, as is, but it summer it’s fun to lightly flavor your water. Italian syrups are famous all over the world, often used in making Italian granite “ices", simple shaved ice topped with syrup. Some of the first Sorbetti.
In Sicily, there is a man with a block of ice and syrups.
In Catania, they do a Selzter water with salt and lemon. It is so refreshing. The salt helps you not dehydrate.
But there are also fruit syrups and simple lemon as well. My last trip I had a lemon granita topped with ice tea, that was incredible. Italians don’t need alcohol to be happy. I love making my own infusions to flavor water, prosecco or cocktails as well as drizzling on gelato or in a cake for flavoring.
This week I made elderflower syrup.
